The Spring Lake First Aid Squad was formed in the summer of 1928. The squad was formally incorporated in the spring of 1930, as the second incorporated squad in the country. Belmar was the first. The squad participated during the Morro Castle disaster by treating 128 people who had made their way to shore. We were also the second squad to arrive at the Hindenburg tragedy at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station.
Mission and Accomplishments:
The squad provides emergency medical (First Aid) treatment and transportation to hospitals for residents and visitors to Spring Lake and Spring Lake Heights. The squad answers all fire calls as standby in case of an injury to a firefighter. The squad drives over 7500 miles answering over 900 first aid and fire calls each year. This represents over 2000 volunteer hours saving the taxpayers of Spring Lake and Spring Lake Heights almost $75,000 each year.
The squad is funded in two ways. One is by a line item on both the Spring Lake and Spring Lake Heights Borough budgets, and the second is by the generous contributions of both boroughs residents. The Spring Lake First Aid Squad is completely volunteer and welcomes new members. If you want to make a difference in your community in this manner please contact the squad for information and an application to join using the information above. No experience is necessary, the squad will arrange for all necessary training.
