Garbage and Recycling

General Information

The following are the general guidelines and regulations governing the collection of garbage and recyclables in the Borough of Spring Lake.  If you cannot find the answer to your questions here, please contact Borough Hall.

TIME FOR PLACEMENT FOR COLLECTION

ON RECYCLING DAYS newspapers, bottles and cans may be placed at the curb after 6 pm on the evening before the designated Wednesday and no later than 7 am on the designated Wednesday.

ON "BULKY ITEM" DAYS, "CLEAN UP" DAYS, OR "TREE LIMBS, HEDGES AND SHRUBBERY" DAYS,  items may be placed at the curb after 6 pm on the evening before the designated Wednesday and no later than 7 am on the designated Wednesday.

The placing of any item at the curb at any other time is a violation of Borough Ordinances 16-1980, 12-1987 and 30-1993 and will result in such items not being picked up and the issuance of a warning and, for repeated violations, a summons.

CONTAINERS

All household trash should be put in plastic or paper bags and must be placed in a sturdy, non-disposable, plastic, metal or similar containers; contents not exceeding 50 lbs.

TYPES OF RECYCLABLES

NEWSPAPERS and all the pages which came with the newspaper as purchased or delivered must be stacked and tied with STRING ONLY and placed at the curb.  (Newspaper in bags, tied with anything other than string or mixed with junk mail and magazines, will not be collected).

BOTTLES AND CANS must be rinsed and empty.  (Caps should be removed from plastic drink and detergent containers).

BULKY ITEMS (chairs, sofas, furniture, washers, dryers, hot water heaters, stoves, bed mattresses and box springs, carpeting and similar items) may be placed at the curb.

TREE LIMBS, HEDGES AND SHRUBBERY should be placed at the curb with the butt ends facing in one direction and cannot exceed 4 ft. in length and 2 in. in diameter.

LEAVES (free of sticks and brush) may be placed in the street at the curbside for collection from October 17 to December 20 or may be taken to the Reclamation Center any time of the year.

GRASS CLIPPINGS or other vegetation cannot be accepted.  Please compost or leave on lawn.

REFRIGERATION APPLIANCES (air conditioners, dehumidifiers, freezers, or refrigerators).  These require removal of refrigerant prior to disposal.  Please call Borough Clerk's office for disposal information. 

HAZARDOUS, CHEMICAL OR CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

HAZARDOUS OR CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS, TIRES OR PAINT will not be collected. Please call Monmouth County Hazardous Waste Facility at 732-922-2234.

RECLAMATION CENTER

In an effort to improve our Reclamation Center, we have made a few changes, which should make things more convenient.  Please read the labels and place items in the proper containers.  All residents are invited to utilize the Municipal Reclamation Center Monday through Saturday , 8 AM to 4 PM.  The Center is located at Fifth and Salem Avenues where an attendant will be on hand to assist you. There are designated containers for disposing of the following items Please read labels on the containers:  NEWSPAPERS, MIXED PAPER, INCLUDING JUNK MAIL, TELEPHONE BOOKS AND MAGAZINES. There is an area for METAL ITEMS such as appliances (no refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, or dehumidifiers), bicycles and large heavy metal objects.  There is a container for LEAVES – No Grass.   Containers are also marked for CORRUGATED CARDBOARD (EMPTY BOXES), BULKY HOUSEHOLD ITEMS (NO CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS), CO-MINGLED  (GLASS BOTTLES AND JARS, BI METAL AND ALUMINUM FOOD AND BEVERAGE CANS, PLASTIC POURABLE CONTAINERS NO LARGER THAN ONE GALLON AND BRUSH (TREE LIMBS, HEDGE AND SHRUBBERY TRIMMINGS) AND CLOTHING BINS (AMVETS).AGAIN, PLEASE PLACE ITEMS IN THE APPROPRIATE CONTAINER.  ALL CONTAINERS ARE CLEARLY LABELED.

For safety's sake, we cannot allow any resident to scavenge from the containers.  Other towns have reported serious injuries and in one case a fatality occurred from people trying to retrieve articles from containers.  If you accidentally drop or discard something, please see an attendance for assistance.  After you have emptied your containers, please exit the facility in a timely manner. This will limit the wait time for those entering the facility.

A Borough Issued 2008 Decal is required to use the Reclamation Center and should be affixed to the driver's side front bumper of the vehicle.  Decals are available at the Borough Clerk's Office for Spring Lake residents only.  For additional information, please call the Borough Clerk's office at 449-0800 Monday-Friday 8 AM-4 PM.
